Manchester City are seeking video footage from Wigan following the ugly pitch invasion that marred the League One side's shock FA Cup win with police launching an investigation.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are looking into the ugly scenes at the DW Stadium, which also saw CIty striker Sergio Aguero clash with a fan who had invaded the pitch.

A statement from GMP said: "Police are investigating after disorder at a football match in Wigan.

"On Monday 19 February 2018, Wigan Athletic FC hosted Manchester City FC in the 5th round of the FA Cup at the DW Stadium.

After the final whistle blew, some Wigan fans went onto the pitch to celebrate.

However, shortly after, a small number of fans in the away end became aggressive and started damaging the advertising boards.

Officers were swiftly deployed to keep the opposing sides separated, and the situation returned to normality within a very short space of time.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of affray following an incident outside the ground and remain in custody.

No injuries have been reported and GMP are working with Wigan Athletic to establish the full circumstances around this incident.

"Chief Superintendent Stuart Ellison of GMP’s Territorial Commander for Wigan, said: “Football is a family event and the disruption that players and fans alike faced last night, will not be tolerated.

“As soon as people were on the pitch, we immediately deployed our resources to the front of the stands, where they were able to keep the two groups of supporters apart and prevent any further disruption.

“Our officers met with the club and other partners ahead of the match to carry out a full risk assessment, which ensured we had the appropriate resources for the number of people attending.

“Emotions always run high at football matches, and sometimes, this means that officers have to intervene to ensure the safety of the fans.

“We have made two arrests but as our investigation into last night’s disruption continues, I’d ask anyone with information about the incident to please come forward.”

Unconfirmed reports have claimed Aguero was spat at by the fan in question, which is one theory why the forward reacted so angrily and had to be restrained by City staff as the situation escalated.

City want answers from Wigan over why fans were allowed to evade security and spill on to the pitch, putting the safety of their players in jeopardy at the final whistle.

Advertising hoardings were thrown on to the pitch from the away end as Wigan fans on the pitch goaded their City counterparts, with stewards and police struggling to contain the situation.

The FA have received referee Anthony Taylor's match report and are gathering evidence as they investigate the ugly scenes.

They will seek the observations of both clubs with regard to the issue of the pitch invasion, with Wigan facing a potential charge of failing to control their fans.

Wigan have already promised to co-operate fully with the FA investigation into the incident.

Wigan will conduct "a full investigation" into the pitch invasion which followed last night's FA Cup win over Manchester City, the League One club have announced.

Chief Executive Jonathan Jackson commented: “Whilst we appreciate that the vast majority of supporters who ran on to the pitch did so spontaneously to celebrate a famous victory, we were disappointed with the action of a minority of supporters who acted in an inappropriate manner. Player and staff safety is of paramount importance and we will conduct a full investigation.

“However, it is important to not let the actions of a few supporters detract from an incredible night at the DW Stadium.

"A special atmosphere was created by both sets of supporters and the match was yet another memorable day in the history of Wigan Athletic.”

The Latics will now face Southampton in the quarter-finals at the DW Stadium, hoping to replicate their miracle run to lifting the trophy in 2013.
